Meeting Aesclepius

Describe your meditative practices for the week and discuss the experience. Explain how mindfulness or meditation has fostered an increase in your psychological or spiritual wellness. How can you continue to apply these practices in your life to foster greater health and wellness?

The meditation practice this week was more challenging for me than most. I was able to imagine a person, my grandmother who passed away the day before my daughter was born almost 3 years ago. I could imagine her standing in front of me, but didn't really connect with the confession side of the exercise. Although I have noticed somewhat of a change in my psychological side, I slow things down a bit more and think things through. I can continue to apply some of the meditation practices into my life by taking more time to myself to just sit and relax. I would like to meditate immediately after I work out, but I feel like I just would not be able to sit still after I had just finished. For me to actually sit and be able to focus on meditation practices, I feel like I should set aside a certain time each day to do so.

Describe the saying: "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" (p.477). How does this apply to the health and wellness professional? Do you have an obligation to your clients to be developing your health psychologically, physically, and spiritually? Why or why not? How can you implement psychological and spiritual growth in your personal life?

I think the saying means that you cannot fully understand or coach something to someone else unless you have experienced it for yourself first. This can apply to health and wellness in quite a few ways.  If you are preaching to a client about eating healthy, but you are not following your same rules they probably won't be too enthused about it. If you don't exercise and keep yourself in shape as a trainer, why would someone want to listen to you tell them what to do but not actually do it yourself? You definitely have an obligation to your clients. We all choose our own paths in life, and our own careers. If you aren't in touch with yourself physically and psychologically, it would make it hard for anyone else to become closer to you in those aspects as well. It is important to continue to grow psychologically and spiritually throughout your personal life to have some sort of stability. We as humans need to be in touch with our inner selves to completely appreciate who we are as people.

  1. Hi Beth,
I couldn't agree more. As future health and wellness professionals we have an obligation to our clients to be the epitome of our career field. I often wonder how some doctors or nurses can smoke when they preach to patients not to smoke? This is alarming to me and of course hypocritical.
I hope you have a great week! Great blog!

  2. Losing a loved one is always hard but learning how to keep their spirit alive, connect with them and now learn to use these deep emotions to open your consciousness and explore your inner being brings a tear of joy. I too lost a family member (Dad) while pregnant with, I speak of him so much that I forget they never had a chance to meet. The exercise was personal to me too but I think that's why I enjoyed it so much.

I agree with your explanation for the phrase. Its about leading by example, walking the walk and talking the talk.

  3. So true. I wouldn't want to pay much attention to a personal fitness trainer if they weren't in good physical condition, so why would someone want to learn from me if I didn't have experience and proof that what I was teaching and preaching was legit.

  4. Hi Beth,
If I tried to sit down and meditate after working out, I would not be able sit still either. I imagined a person that most people don't I think. I imagined myself years down the road, having accomplished all the goals that I currently have set out to do. The reason I did this is because it was the first thing that came to me, so I went with it. Imagining myself fully encompassed with health, happiness, and wholeness really made me feel good, and provided a little extra motivation, while also achieving a clear mind.
